Many of the people in the fanfiction community are gainfully employed. Some of the real life professions held by members of the fanfic community: Professional Writer (published), Lawyer, US Army Chaplain's Assistant, Computer Engineer, Database Administrator, Journalist. I personally am an Internet specialist (which means that it is in my job description to protect minors from offensive material online when I see it).
In addition, we're a closeknit family. I, at least, have met the concerned parents of at least one young member of the community (kaleko), and have sent helpful gifts to another (Tapestry -- a gelmask and a warm sweater).
Frito, SabreBabe and TeriJ are all mothers. When the room was beset by Ultim0 (a geniune pervert and sicko), the three mothers united in rallying the room to protect the minors from him.
On top of that, we also show genuine concern for each other. You may want to check with the people involved in these instances for permission. Frito has already given her consent to use her testimonial on the yellow ribbon page.
Alec Wire came in one night having an allergic reaction to something he ate. The entire chatroom united in exhorting him to go to a hospital. He did, and later came back to thank us for it.
Kaleko came in one night with an earache. The entire chatroom united in exhorting her to go to a hospital. She did, and was discovered that had she left the condition any longer she might have lost the hearing in her ear.
Frito credits the support and love (online, RL, and on the phone) of the #subcafe people with giving her the strength to first take Tae Kwon Do and also to get out of her abusive relationship and into safety. In addition, the #subcafe community also united to keep Frito's abusive husband from using the chat forum as a tool from which to netstalk her. The same has been done for kaleko with someone attempting to contact her against her wishes online.
The #subcafe community chipped in money -- even those who could only spare pennies -- so that MsMarvel could get out of her abusive family situation and move to a location where she can continue her college education and get a job.
Redhawk found that the #subcafe people have helped him to discover that he need not hold up his emotional shielding after being scarred in previous relationships.
Jess Willey also credits the #subcafe people with helping him adjust to being "different."
The #subcafe community got together on the phone and in RL and via chat and email to make certain that Dex had truly come to no harm when someone at Sheridan College played a cruel joke and sent out an email saying he had committed suicide.
